Interview Questions
- Explain the signal processing pipeline for an automotive radar (from raw ADC samples to object detection and tracking).
- How would you design and optimize a radar signal processing algorithm (e.g., rangeโDoppler FFT, CFAR detection) in MATLAB and then port it to C for embedded use?
- Describe your experience with Detection and Estimation theory and how it applies to radarโbased driver assistance (e.g., thresholding, false alarm vs detection tradeโoffs).
- How do you perform signal analysis on recorded inโvehicle data (CANoe/ADTF logs) to debug radar performance issues such as ghost targets or missed detections?
- Explain the differences and typical use cases of CAN, LIN, and FlexRay in modern vehicles, and how radar ECUs communicate over these buses.
- Walk through your approach to writing and executing software tests on simulators for safetyโcritical ADAS functions before integrating into prototype vehicles.
- How would you analyze the impact of sensor, brakes, and steering component properties on overall ADAS software performance and safety margins?
- Describe a time you used requirements management tools (like DOORS) to manage functional and performance requirements for an automotive software component.
- How do you troubleshoot software integration issues when radar functions behave differently in bench simulation vs real vehicle tests?
- Give an example of how you collaborated with system engineers and customers to define software behaviour and performance KPIs for a driver assistance feature.
Selection process
- Shortlisting based on strong embedded/automotive/DSP background with radar or ADAS exposure, plus tools like MATLAB/C, CANoe/ADTF, and requirements management.
- Technical interviews on radar fundamentals, signal processing, vehicle bus systems, embedded C/MATLAB coding, and safetyโcritical software practices.
- Practical case discussions on analysing recorded vehicle data, debugging ADAS issues, and assessing the influence of mechanical components on software behaviour.
- Fit/behavioural round to assess proactiveness, communication, teamwork, and a continuousโimprovement mindset aligned with Valeoโs vision of greener, safer mobility.
Pro Tip
Prepare a concise portfolio showing:
- One radar or signalโprocessing project (range/Doppler, tracking, or sensor fusion) with MATLAB plots and an embedded or C implementation.
- One automotive communication or logging project using CAN/CANoe (or simulated) where you decoded messages and linked them to system behaviour.
- Be ready to whiteboard a simplified radar processing chain, explain Detection and Estimation choices, and walk through how you would analyse and fix a realโvehicle ADAS issue using logged data.
