Interview Questions
- How do you differentiate performance engineering from simple performance testing, and what activities do you own end to end?
- Describe how you design performance, scalability, stability and stress tests for a distributed transactional system.
- Which load-testing tools (JMeter, LoadRunner, etc.) have you used, and how did you structure your scripts and scenarios?
- How do you choose and track performance metrics (throughput, response time, error rate, resource utilization) against benchmarks and SLAs?
- Explain a real incident where you identified a performance bottleneck and worked with developers/DBAs to tune it.
- How do you baseline production vs. test environments and ensure test workloads realistically simulate user behavior?
- Describe your experience integrating performance tests into Agile/Scrum workflows and CI/CD pipelines.
- How have you used TDD/BDD principles or automated tests to protect performance characteristics over time?
- What is your approach to test data design and environment setup for large-scale performance tests?
- How do you present performance test results and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders (product, business)?
Selection Process
- Application and resume screening emphasizing 2–5 years performance engineering, load tools, and experience in large, distributed transactional systems (ideally fintech).
- Technical screening on performance engineering fundamentals, metrics, and scenario design.
- Hands-on round: designing a performance test plan, reading/creating JMeter or LoadRunner scripts, and interpreting sample results to identify bottlenecks and tuning options.
- Discussion with engineering/architecture leads on strategy for scalability, capacity planning, and collaboration with dev/ops in an Agile environment.
- HR/managerial round covering communication, prioritization of multiple performance streams, and fit with Finastra’s culture and pace.
Pro Tip
Prepare one or two detailed case studies where you owned performance engineering: include workload models, tools used, key metrics, bottlenecks found, exact tuning changes (code, DB indexes, configuration), and before/after numbers. Bring sample dashboards or reports (sanitized) to show how you communicate insights and drive decisions.
